Conditions / Causes / Treatments

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) occurs when the cartilage between joints wears down, causing the bones to rub together. This leads to swelling, stiffness, and pain. Symptoms typically begin in middle age, and nearly everyone experiences some symptoms by the age of 70.

Causes

  • Family history
  • Being overweight
  • Fractures or other joint injuries
  • Overuse
  • Playing sports that involve direct impact on the joint
  • Certain medical conditions can also affect joint health

Symptoms

  • Pain, typically localized to the affected tendon
  • Pain that worsens with activity or movement
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity
  • Creaking or popping sounds when moving the affected joint
  • Weakness in the muscles attached to the affected tendon

Bursitis

Bursae are fluid-filled sacs that cushion the spaces between muscles, tendons, and joints. When a bursa becomes inflamed, it leads to bursitis—a painful condition marked by swelling and irritation.

Causes

  • Overuse or repetitive motions
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Prolonged pressure on a joint
  • Sudden trauma
  • Occasionally underlying medical conditions like arthritis or gout can also contribute to bursitis.

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness when you press around the joint
  • Stiffness and aching when you move the affected joint
  • Swelling, warmth, or redness over the joint

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is typically caused by overuse. Repetitive motions—especially in certain jobs or activities—can lead to inflammation of a tendon. As a result, the affected area becomes painful, swollen, and difficult to move, limiting joint function.

Causes

  • Overuse or repetitive motions
  • Injuries
  • Aging
  • Underlying Conditions (ie: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gout, Infections, Medications)
  • Poor posture
  • Lack of stretching/conditioning
  • Misalignment of bones or joints

Sprains, Strains and Fractures

One of our experienced doctors will walk you through the various treatment options for these conditions.

Treatment Options For Common Issues

Dr. Meisel specializes in hip and knee joint replacement, arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder and knee, hand and foot surgeries and fracture care.
Dr. Meisel performs surgery at McLaren Macomb in Mount Clemens, Michigan.

Rotator Cuff Tear

Arthroscopic shoulder surgery allows for complex procedures to be completed through small incisions around the shoulder area. This allows for easier post-operative care and decreases pain from similar open procedures. These procedures include rotator cuff repair, labral repair, bursectomy and removal of bone spurs. Continued advances in this area are allowing more aggressive post operative therapy and quicker restoration of function.

Hip Osteoarthritis

Total hip joint replacement surgery continues to be refined. New implants with larger contact surfaces and harder materials improve joint motion and stability as well as implant survival. This coupled with a small incision surgical technique allows for shorter hospital stays and faster rehabilitation to normal activities of daily living and enjoyment. Dr. Meisel has been using these implants routinely for the last 20 years with remarkable success. Contact his office to schedule a consultation regarding this procedure.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common painful and disabling disease. Symptoms include pain in the hand and wrist, numbness, and weakness. When conservative treatment fails, surgery is often necessary. Conservative treatment includes anti-inflammatories, splinting, and steroid injections. Nerve tests are usually completed prior to surgery to confirm the diagnosis and to exclude other neurologic disease
Carpal tunnel Surgery is completed as an outpatient procedure. If you think you have carpal tunnel syndrome and wish to be evaluated, please call for an appointment.
